The Process of Direct Selling

Direct selling is a marketing strategy that removes the middle man from the process. One of the most commonly used direct selling programs is a multi-level marketing system, also referred to as an MLM. While MLMs are the most common direct selling programs, other industries also take advantage of the benefits offered by direct selling.

Direct selling systems are usually set up as a marketing strategy for a parent company. The parent company designs the products and/or services that their sales team will be selling, as well as a code of conduct that each sales associate is required to follow. This code of conduct helps to maintain consistency of service delivery and sales tactics, which protects the customer and improves the ability of the sales associate to establish a positive professional reputation.

Profits earned in a direct selling program are distributed to multiple levels of the organization. The sales associate responsible for the sell receives a set commission based on their total sales volume or associate level. In a MLM system, the associate responsible for signing on the person who made the sale also receives a small commission. Profits continue to be distributed all the way up to the parent company who receives the largest portion of the sale's value.
