Library Background
Libraries come in many forms. They can be physical collections of books, reference materials and media items or they can be digital collections of media items and literature. Since the earliest part of history, man has kept the knowledge of the world in libraries. The greatness of a civilization was often judged by the number of volumes or the size of their library.

As history progressed, libraries became a status symbol for royalty and the aristocracy. As literacy spread and the cost of printing books decreased, public libraries opened up making the world's knowledge available to everyone. Today, public, university, digital, private and school libraries provide people with easy access to millions of volumes of fiction and nonfiction materials.
Elementary and High School Libraries
The first library that most people walk into is their elementary school library. This is the library where kids learn about the Dewey Decimal System, about book classifications and about how to check out materials from a library. If you work in an elementary or high school library then your business card needs to not only reflect what you do, but it also needs to reflect the age of the students that you serve. To do this you will need to select a business card graphic that is age appropriate. For example, if you work for an elementary school library then you may want to select a kid friendly graphic. In order to personalize your business card you may want to consider adding your photo to your card. This will help students, parents and teachers learn who you are.
University Libraries
University libraries are special. They contain advanced reference materials that college students can use for research or to help them complete their assignments. If you work at a university library then your business card needs to (1) identify who you are, (2) identify the university or college that you work for, (3)identify the library that you are affiliated with and (4) identify what department in the library you work. The back of your business card is a great place to publish a map of the library or to print one of your favorite quotes.
Digital Libraries
Digital libraries are quickly replacing the need for students and researchers to go to the public library. Digital libraries typically require users to subscribe to the library in order to use it, however, some special digital libraries are offered free to the public. If you own, operate, or work for a digital library then you will want to design a library themed business card that not only utilizes a graphic that links you to your library, but that also features a graphic that has a digital motif. In addition to printing out a set of business cards to hand out to colleagues, vendors and potential customers, you will also want to scan your card and post it on your website or include it as your email signature.
