Geology
Geology is basically the Science of the Earth's solid matter. The term "geology" was first coined in 1778 by a man named Jean-Andre Deluc. However, it was not officially recognized as a science until 1797 when it was introduced by the Encyclopedia Britanica. The field of geology has many sub-specialties that range from oceanography to paleontology and planetary geology.
Geologists
Geologists study the composition, structure, and other physical aspects of the Earth, using sophisticated instruments to analyze the composition of earth, rock, and Water. They typically help to search for natural resources such as groundwater, oil, and metals. They are also tasked to preserve and clean up the environment. Geologists usually work in the exploration and extraction of petroleum and natural gas and as such, they are compensated very well.
Geologists can be considered to be a rare breed as there are not too many of them. Getting in touch with one may be difficult at times. Geologists can make themselves more accessible to People who need their services by having professionally designed and printed business cards to give out to potential clients. The business cards should state their training and areas of expertise in order for clients to reach the right kind of geologist they need.
Geologist's Work Environment
Geologists spend a large portion of their Time in the field - analyzing information collected by remote sensing instruments, conducting geological surveys, identifying and examining rocks, drawing field Maps, and measuring the Earth's gravity and magnetic fields. They also spend time in laboratories in order to examine chemical and physical properties of specimens collected.
Giving out your own business cards that provide information on how you can be reached will be important especially if you are spending much of your time in remote areas. For example, having an answering service number in the business card will ensure that the geologist will get messages from prospective clients.
Geologist's Education and Training
While a bachelor's degree may be enough for a few entry-level positions, most geologist positions require a master's degree in geology or earth science. A Ph.D. is always necessary for high-level research and College teaching positions. Many states require geologists to obtain a license from a state licensing board. These bits of information, when added to the geologist's business card can boost his stock in the business community. Clients will be more confident availing the services of a well-educated and experienced geologist instead of hiring a novice.
Geologist's Sub-specialties
A geologist can concentrate their studies or research on several disciplines such as Economic geology, Geophysics, Hydrogeology, Isotope geology, Marine geology, Palaentology, Pedology, Structural geology, and Volcanology. Professional geologists who work in any of the subspecialties typically are employed by Government agencies, private firms, and academic institutions.
It's a good idea to list subspecialties on the back of your Geologist business card. Clients' confidence can further be boosted if previous experiences in each of the subspecialties are noted on the business card too.
