Court Reporters

Court reporters provide an important service to the judicial system. They produce a verbatim transcript of court hearings and proceedings. The judge, attorneys and jury can use the transcript to help them do their jobs. Typically, to be a court reporter you will need special training in transcription and stenography.

Court Reporter Business

Most states require that their court reporters be able to type at least 225 words per minute, however, most can produce up to 300 words per minute. In addition to being able to type fast and accurately, many states also require that their court reporters be notaries public and that they have special certifications.

Certified Court Reporter (CCR)

The most basic certification that you can get as a court reporter is as a Certified Court Reporter. Certified Court Reporters have met the professional skill and training standards held by the National Court Reporters Association and are capable of performing the duties assigned to court reporters. If you are a CCR then your business card needs to reflect this. You will also want to select a business card theme that demonstrates your connection with the judicial system.

Registered Professional Reporter (RPR)

Registered Professional Reporters are the next step up from a CCR. This certification requires you to pass a four part professional examination and it requires to you continue your professional education by taking a specified number of training credits each year. Since RPRs generally get paid more than CCRs, you will want to make sure that you note on your business card that you have this certification. You will also want to state if you are a notaries public in addition to a RPR.

Certified Real-Time Reporter

Certified Real-Time Reporters are a special group of court reporters. Generally they are trained to handle the challenges of televised court room proceedings. In order to be certified as a real-time reporter you will need to take special classes and pass exams that demonstrate your ability to use 'Computer Aided Transcription Technology' to produce real-time transcripts of the court room proceeding. If you have this distinction you will want to print that you are a Certified Real-Time Reporter under your name. You may also want to include information about the court house that you are affiliated with and the broadcast program or channel that you are affiliated with. Some Certified Real-Time Reporters also go by the title 'captionist.'
