About Carolina

Photography and medicine have this in common; there is art and science to both and both have the capacity to change lives.

While I am privileged to be a physician, I am grateful for the hobby and avocation of photography. It is a counterpoint to the sometimes hectic and stressful environment of the operating room. Photography is my Zen.

I love the Nikon system and have over a dozen lenses ranging from a 10.5mm fisheye to a 300-800mm lens (by Sigma, affectionately known as the Sigmonster, and about the only non Nikon lens in my collection) that weighs 13 pounds! I truly enjoy most genres of photography and have several of Nikon's top bodies, including the 24.5MP D3x, a 12MP D3, a 12MP D2x converted for infrared photography, a 12MP D300 converted for astrophotography, and a budding studio space.

I enjoy learning new techniques and my next learning adventures (pushing the envelope for myself) will be to tackle trip wire photography and astrophotography.

I do not like mediocrity. If I am not happy with a shot, I won't let it into my portfolio. Sometimes it can take over 100 shots to come away with a 'keeper'. My photograph of 'Police Car Lights' was this way. The police car was sitting there to block off a street for a community festival. I was attracted to the flashing colorful lights and set my camera on a nearby saw horse and began shooting away. Normally, we perceive individual police car lights as flashing at different times. But there was one, and only one, camera frame where some lights came on before others had died out... Aha! It was a decisive moment that I would have never captured if I had not been adventurous, focused, and patient, or if I had stopped sooner because I was willing to settle for less.
