Taxi Driver History
Taxis first made an appearance back in the early part of the 1600s. They were originally horse drawn carriages called Hackney Carriages. These carriages for hire originated in Paris, however, the idea of a carriage for hire spread to other major European cities like London. By the 19th century the Hackney Carriages were replaced by the Hansom Cab. These horse drawn taxis were faster, more reliable and fortunately much safer then their predecessor was.
The first major advancement in taxis occurred during the final decade of the 19th century. This is when the taximeter, the device used for calculating a fare, was invented by Wilhelm Bruhn, a German. By 1897 the first non-horse drawn taxis were invented and put into service in Stuttgart. However, the first motorized taxi that came standard with a meter was the Daimler Victoria. Gas powered taxis finally made their appearance in 1899 in Paris. These taxi models spread to London in 1903 and then to New York City in 1907. This is when the color yellow was selected, as New York taxi drivers realized that yellow could be easily seen from blocks away.
