What is a Phlebotomist?
A phlebotomist is someone trained to collect blood samples and usually works in a clinic, Doctor's office, hospital or other clinical environment. They are trained to process and analyze the specimen of blood in a Laboratory setting. Often a Medical assistant or assistant Nurse is trained as a phlebotomist as part of their daily routine. Due to the nature of this job, a phlebotomist must be knowledgeable about laboratory safety because of the exposure to diseases so there are strict procedures and guidelines used to process the blood sample.
Most phlebotomist jobs are found in a hospital, clinic or a Physician's office where blood is routinely drawn as part of the daily activities to run tests to determine types of diseases or other conditions. A phlebotomist can also work in a commercial or independent medical laboratory or a home Health Agency as well as public health Clinics. Blood Banks such as the Red Cross would hire a phlebotomist as they are often on blood drives and Research labs are another career path for a phlebotomist.
